Rabbi Hillel's Coronavirus Advice

Rabbi Hillel, for whom our Hillel on campus is named, lived over 2,000 years ago. Coronavirus was not on the list of challenges that he dealt with, though there was war, illness and famine in the areas where he lived. I find myself thinking of one of his famous teachings during this time: "In a place where there is no one to lead, one must strive to be a leader" (Pirkei Avot 2:5).

We are at a point now where we are all needed to lead, each in our own way. As we navigate uncertain times, there will be moments where we can each be the hero in the room, whether it's at work, at home with our families, or in our communities.

Hillel is committed to empowering the students to step up as leaders during this time. Already we have supported their efforts to volunteer in the Buffalo community as Hillel Helpers and to create game nights, Zoom Hebrew lessons, and movie watching parties to stay connected while at home. The students are resourceful and committed to coming through this challenge stronger and better connected.

With your help, we can continue to support them through the unknown. We are confident that the leadership skills they gain through this time will set them up for a lifetime of leadership in the Jewish community.

Please make a gift to Hillel of Buffalo this week to support student leadership development. All gifts up to $2,500 each will be matched, dollar-for-dollar, from May 4 - May 8 for Hillel Global Week of Giving. Please donate at hillel.org/Buffalo. If you are in the position to give, we would be deeply grateful for your support.
