There will be famines, earthquakes in various places. All these aren't just the beginning of birth pains. Well, for most of jesus' ministry, his disciples were rather slow to grasp. What jesus' mission really was that he had come to be the lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world, that his death would a tone for sin. But here the disciples associate the destruction of Herod's temple with the end of the age, and also with the return of Christ, it's not surprising.
